Leighann Lenti is Director of Government Relations at Wireless Generation. Prior to joining Wireless, Leighann held a number of education policy jobs at both the state and federal level. Leighann served as Deputy Director in Governor Schwarzenegger's DC office, where her portfolio included education policy. She then worked for the US Department of Education, where she was detailed to Senator Judd Gregg's office to work the No Child Left Behind reauthorization, before she returned to the Department to work on the Differentiated Accountability and Growth Model pilots and state accountability plans. Leighann holds a Bachelor's degree from George Mason University in education and a Master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in Politics and Education.
What is Adaptive Instruction? Presented by: Dr. Ellen Edmonds, Sr. Manager, Instructional Solutions, Wireless Generation
With many districts and schools experiencing difficulty in growing or even sustaining literacy gains achieved over the past several years, educators are looking towards sustainable, innovative approaches to more effectively help students. Adaptive instruction is an educational model created to meet the diverse social and academic needs of students. Underlying the model's design is the premise that students learn in different ways and at varying rates and require different amounts and types of instructional support. During this free one hour Webcast, Dr. Edmonds will discuss the need for and benefits of an adaptive model of instruction, and how this model is being implemented in classrooms across the country.
Ellen Edmonds is Senior Manager for Instructional Solutions at Wireless Generation. Her prior roles include: Educational Consultant, Adjunct Instructor – University of North Carolina, Charlotte; Director of Early Childhood, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Program Coordinator, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools; Administrator; Reading Intervention Specialist; and Teacher. As a school district employee, she provided leadership in reading instruction and implementation of assessment systems pre-k through grade six. Ellen has worked extensively with Early Reading First and Reading First projects nationally. She has provided professional development and consultation on reading, assessment, and early childhood. The North Carolina resident holds licensure in teaching and curriculum and instruction supervision and was educated at Davidson College, Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and UNC Charlotte.

Dr. Carol Connor is an associate professor at Florida State University, College of Education, Reading and Language Arts, and a research faculty member of the Florida Center for Reading Research and the Florida Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Science. Recently awarded the President’s Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the 2008 Early Career Contributions from the Society for Research on Child Development, and the 2007 APA Richard Snow Award, she completed her Ph.D in education and was an assistant research scientist in psychology at University of Michigan just prior to coming to Florida State.
I Didn’t Know They Knew That! Using Formative Assessment to Promote Children’s Early Math Development Presented by: Dr. Herb Ginsburg
Formative Assessment can reveal what reasoning underlies grades K-3 students’ math performance and help teachers deliver effective instruction. Join us as Dr. Herb Ginsburg, leading researcher on development of mathematical thinking and assessment of the cognitive function explores various assessment techniques and shows how “formative assessment” can lead to improved teaching.
Dr. Herbert Ginsburg is the Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. His research interests include the development of mathematical thinking (with particular attention to young children and disadvantaged populations) and the assessment of cognitive function. He has developed mathematics curricula for young children, tests of mathematical thinking, and video workshops to enhance teachers' understanding of students' learning of mathematics. Currently he is exploring how computer technology can be used to help teachers assess children's mathematical knowledge. He has been teaching a graduate course on the psychology of mathematics education for many years and has published widely in this area.
RTI: The Right Thing to Do and the Right Way to Do It April 15, 2009 (3:00p.m. EST) Presented by: Dr. John McCook
Having a solid plan in place to evaluate Response to Intervention (RTI) has become essential for reducing special education referrals and closing the achievement gap. But before getting started, it is important that schools and districts understand the most important factors to consider as they plan and implement an effective RTI model.
Dr. John McCook serves as a consultant for school systems across the nation and has developed training programs for school districts on special education, Section 504, the pre-referral process, and implementing the response to intervention. His presentations in national meetings, including the National School Board Association, the International Association of Pupil Personnel, MEDS/PDN, and the national legal conferences for LRP, have won him recognition in several publications regarding school legal issues and special education. Dr. John McCook is the Director of Pupil Personnel for the Knox County School District in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Margaret Honey, is a former vice president of Education Development Center and former director of EDC’s Center for Children and Technology, has worked in the field of educational research since 1981. She holds a doctorate from Columbia University in developmental psychology and has spent her career conducting research on the role of media in children’s learning and development.
